By Darelle Moore

When going for a pre-owned vehicle it is very much advisable to make sure that you will take a look at the vehicle in person and drive it around to see if there is something seriously wrong with it that would make unacceptable for you. After all, you will be going to spend 5,000 to 15,000 dollars on a used car and you have all the right to know exactly what it is you are going to put your hard-earned money on. And for those who are first time used auto buyers, it is imperative that they seriously take a look at the vehicle they are interested in to reduce the possibility of ending up with a lemon car that will cost them even more in the coming months.

So how do you go about inspecting this used vehicle being offered you? A key aspect to remember is that the car inspection should be performed during the day and not at night when it would be difficult to clearly see what you are inspecting. At night, you will have to depend on the light produced by electric lamps to check the car and there is a good chance that you will notice scratches or any other kind of damage on the body of the car.

Make sure the car is parked on level ground so you would get a good look if the tires are even or if there is any sagging on the body of the car. It is also important to check if there is an uneven wear on the tires of the car as this is a sign that there is a problem with the suspension of the vehicle.

You may also check out information sources so you would know what else you should be looking out for. It is also advisable to bring your own mechanic with you and let him conduct the inspection and test drive himself so you that would have the benefit of a professional opinion on whether the car is worth buying. It is also good practice to test drive the car on a cool engine as a cool engine can give more information on the car than a warm engine could.

Before you inspect the car, you have to do some research on used car values and prices. You can go to various sites to get an idea of how much used cars are valued and should be priced. This way, you can determine if the dealers or private sellers are asking you for more money than what the car is actually worth.

This is particularly helpful if you are going to buy the car from its owner because owners tend to overprice their cars out of some emotional attachment they had formed with the car. Knowing exactly what the car is worth would help you set a price to negotiate with the sellers. Make sure you will set a reasonable price for the vehicle. This way you would not antagonize the sellers because you have to assume that they have done their homework too.
