How To Use Cylinder Valves

By Karyn Shields

For many cylinder devices used by many professionals, there are always safety measures to consider and applied to the procedure. It is important to set up any cylinder so that the valves can be accessible over time. There are various cylinders equipped with good stem valves. The valve must also remain on the stem one at a time an in the same service. So, before using the device, the threads in every regulator and even for other fittings should also checked well to ensure its compatibility.

It is important for the regulator valves to be pointed away from you to avoid any harm when you open or close the valves. You should not install the cylinder adapters on the regulators for your own safety. Never attempt to repair the cylinder valves if you do not have the expertise. Always seek professional help from experts and ask for an advice. Actually, all valves should be marked with their functions. In addition to that, it is also important to store them in a place where adequate ventilation is present.

There are also safety precautions to be considered. Do not utilize a wrench to open and close a hand wheel type of valve or even using pliers is a big NO. Never use a monkey wrench to loosen up the gas cap. On the other hand, testing for leaks is also a great importance. Leak test all connections because any gas, no matter its health danger may also cause horrible things to anyone by displacing oxygen.

The piping systems must also be checked for some leaks on a regular basis. Most of the leak detection procedures should be implemented before you use a compressed gas system. So, when you open and close the cylinders, there are many things to consider. You only have to open them slowly all the way.

Never use excess pressures if you cannot open it by hand. It is advised to contact the supplier for any replacement if necessary. Close the valves when not in use then bleed pressure from the regulator. You should avoid leaving every valve open when the equipment is not in use even when empty. Moisture and air may also diffuse through an open valve that may cause corrosion and contamination within the cylinder.

You should not also attempt to use the equipment without regulators and reduce the device on hand. You should not strike an electric arc on the device. Never tamper the cylinders in any way. Avoid repainting them and better chance the marking or identification with a certain safety device. Aside from its illegality, it is also dangerous for many non specialists to refill each device or changing the contents.

There could be an explosion, contamination or corrosion. Plastic fittings should not be used for any portion of the high pressured system. Interchanging the regulators and hose lines for one kind of gas to another is also a big NO. This is because, there might be explosions if flammable gases come in contact with oxygen under pressure.

You should avoid any equipment or clothes over the compressed systems. This is because, most clothing can be saturated with some dangerous components. If the gas is also an oxygen compound, it can easily catch fire and can be burned easily. Thus, you must not use some mercury pressure gauges to any ammonia system, since it may only cause explosive compounds.

Finally, when you use this equipment, it is important to seek help from exerts. This is particularly, if you have no certain skills and knowledge in completing the task. It is also better to ensure that everything is in good hands. Always remember that this a simple equipment and it should be handled with someone who have knowledge and skills.
