Purchase Mythology Books For Teens

By Karyn Shields

Myths are a rich source of stories featuring gods and goddesses, heroes and villains, romance, intrigue and strange mythical creatures. Mythology books for teens help to stretch their imagination and introduce them to stories that have had an influence on many areas of present day society such as astronomy, the weather and language to mention a few. Many of these stories are based on classical Greek myths but others come from Norse, Asian, African and other traditions.

Myths provide a way for people to make sense of the world of the world they live in. These ancient stories create reasons for the creation of the earth, natural disasters, disease and more. They often convey moral lessons too and in them the power of the gods is recognised.

A teen is at the age when everything in his or her life is changing and many challenges are faced. At this stage, they have to make certain choices, including moral ones. Preaching is usually very ineffective and myths can provide a context for bringing out truths in an entertaining way. The beautiful heroine or handsome hero usually has to make certain decisions or choices to prevail against evil.

The style of many of these novels written for teens takes the type of language they speak into account and the speech of characters may be casual and even slangy. Some are written taking the sense of humor of a teen into account and will make them laugh. The fact that these types of novels have many fans speaks for itself.

They also provide a great way to escape the reality of every day existence and stretch the imagination. Teenagers begin to see beyond their narrow world and may develop an appreciation for other societies that may stimulate further reading. These novels usually contain drama, romance, fantasy, heroism and all the elements that appeal to teenagers.

Strange creatures always have great allure and myths are full of them. Medusa with living snakes coming out of her head is just one of these creations that have a way of capturing the attention and pulling the reader in hook, line and sinker. Many of these creatures are purely imaginative while others are drawn from existing myths and legends and given new twists. Creatures appearing in different myths may even be combined together to form a forbidding new creature.

When elements from ancient stories are set in modern times, this creates an interesting tension. It encourages the questioning of topics like love, heroism and much more in a completely different setting. The strikingly beautiful or handsome hero or heroine often faces immense odds and overcomes them.

The subject matter often relates to the age-old struggle of good against evil. A teen may not have to face off against a mythological creature or a god with super human attributes. These stories are not only purely entertaining but often bring across the fact that any problems faced can be overcome which can be satisfyingly reassuring.
