Information About Surviving The Grid Going Down

By Arthur Snyder

Many unexpected things take place every day. People want to believe that the national power system is highly resilient. However, that is not always the case. It has some vulnerability that if exploited a disaster can happen. Surviving the grid going down is something that should concern everyone who depends on electric energy. This is the exception rather than the norm. However, judging by past power system failures, future occurrences cannot be completely written off. Therefore, preparing mentally, physically and emotionally will help in the unfortunate scenario of grid failure.

Humans make and maintain power distribution systems. Therefore, there are inherent errors and faults in these systems. These are what cause permanent and temporary failures. At times, the root cause of the problem is simple and easily understandable. In addition, there are usually cases that are beyond the scope of human understanding. Mechanical problems are simple in nature. Thus, they will not take long to fix.

Since the invention of computers and the internet, cyber attacks have been the norm. Banking institutions have lost millions to hackers. Secrets of governments have been leaked to the internet by cyber terrorists. These are evil people bent on disrupting the orderly conduct of life. Some hackers may plan to hack the electricity transmission systems of the major global powers. This will lead to unprecedented blackouts.

Bad weather is one of the leading causes of human suffering. The unpredictable nature of weather, climate and alien forces necessitates top emergency preparedness. The weather does not always behave. At times, cities suffer hurricanes, tornadoes, blizzards and floods. All these affect the grid in one way or another. If one lives in a city that constantly suffers from natural disasters, there is need to prepare adequately for power blackouts.

Having sufficient food reserves is the most important thing that a person can do. People need to eat whether or not there is an emergency situation. Grid failure will affect food production and distribution. With a persisting blackout that affects an entire state or nation, there will definitely be a food crisis. Having stacks of dry foods is highly advisable.

Water is a basic necessity. A human being can survive weeks without food but only a few days without water. Water is the essence of life. It is needed so that to keep the body working perfectly. In preparation for future power failure, a person should stock gallons of water in safe containers. Water has a very long shelf life.

Electricity supplies heat and light to house. When power supply is disrupted, there should be a backup energy source that immediately takes over. Such a source can be kerosene or propane. The best emergency backup heating source is a kerosene heater. This will provide adequate heat when there is no electricity. There is also need to have some hurricane lamps.

The world has many uncertain variables. Those who survive are the people who prepare for emergencies. Grid failure is not something preposterous. It can happen at any time. Actually, in the past, the grid has failed a number of times. There is need for a sensible plan for dealing with emergencies such as power failure. One should implement every measure highlighted on a plan.
