Cognitive Therapies And Failure To Launch Anxiety Syndrome

By Ronald Olson

Children whom suffer from anxiety, ADHD and other emotional issues often have a hard time functioning. The same goes for young adults as when children reach a certain age, it can still be hard to function on a daily basis. In most cases, those having these problems are suffering from Failure to Launch Anxiety Syndrome.

While most often professionals base a diagnosis on the level of improvement in clients, not all can improve. In many cases, seeing improvement in children whom have had issues since birth due to a chemical imbalance in the brain, or those effected by trauma can often take a lot more time than others. In either case, there are several aspects which need be considered before releasing these individuals into general society.

These aspects include any physical disabilities, learning disabilities, whether or not the individual has a connection to reality and whether or not the individual has found happiness. If so, then using a cognitive approach and allowing the individual to learn how to handle different activities can often be beneficial.

Family and loved ones can often be integral when working with these individuals. For, love and acceptance go a long way in helping an individual become more self-aware, self-confident and self-sufficient. Whereas, having these connections can also help build a resistance to procrastination. While this is the case, if the individual has other disabilities which are debilitating, it is important to consider these issues when developing and providing treatment options.

Talk therapy is not often enough to keep these individuals on-track on an ongoing basis. In most cases, there will still need to be ongoing therapy. When taking medication, it is important to obtain a review to determine whether or not there may need to be a change based on changes in the level anxiety an individual may be suffering at any given time.

In most cases, the first time an individual goes outside after being housebound, it is important to have a chaperon. For, even going to the mailbox, grocery store or local park can often be overwhelming. As such, by having a chaperon, these individuals often feel safer, then stronger about going out alone later in the process.

If going outside or leaving home and the individual becomes overwhelmed with anxiety, it is important to turn back. For, while many suffering from this condition can do so, it is not the case for everyone. As such, it is important to recognize and support the needs of those suffering from anxiety at any given time.

While the cognitive therapeutic approach can help many individuals suffering from this condition, there are others whom might need a combination of treatment. In many cases, attachments associated with the mind such as traumas or chemical imbalances can prevent an individual from letting go. While this is the case, it is important that these individuals continue treatment, for there may be a time in the future where it becomes easier to do so.
