How To Become A Hospital CDI Specialist

By Jessica Collins

People who keep and maintain all the documentation of patients in the health sector are known as hospital CDI specialist. These experts also keep documents on clinical trials and other service documents. These experts are thus responsible for ensuring that equality and accuracy in the medical fraternity are maintained. This expert also has to keep all the patient records, charts and other forms of documentation.

They are full-time workers just like all the other staff members thus they work during regular working hours unless there is an emergency. They usually work in clinics, laboratories or hospitals where medical trials are done on a daily basis. There are some requirements that a person has to meet to become a clinical documentation specialist.

The first thing that you should do is completing an undergraduate program in a field related to clinical documentation like the health information technology. These courses usually cover data analysis, informatics, physiology, anatomy, coding procedures and other medical terminologies. After the degree program, you are required to attend an internship program for a few months to gain experience.

The next thing is acquiring a license or getting certified. For you to qualify for the license, you have to take an exam. Once you successfully pass the exam, you will be given the certificate to show that you are a licensed documentation expert. Without this license, you cannot be allowed to work in any institution hence it is advisable to obtain it. More so, the license can help you to secure employment even in another state so long as the certificate is up to date.

Once you obtain this certification, the experience will be necessary for you to become a CDI. Therefore, you will be needed to work in nursing for two years. You can alternatively work in managing health information for the same period. Additionally, you can become a coder or an expert in documentation hence becoming the one responsible for safe keeping of all the health records in an institution.

When you have gained the much-needed experience, you are now qualified healthcare records experts. Thus, one will be required to show a lot of competence in the work that you do and ensure that the doctors gain quick access to the documents at all times. To add on that, you will be needed to update the records depending on the state of the patient.

You can decide to attend voluntary short-course studies offered by the board of clinical documentation and sit for exams to earn yourself another certification. This is not necessary, but the ones who decide to take this exam are at a better advantage compared to those who refuse to sit for these exams. However, the qualifications require a person to submit his/her undergraduate course-work as well as proof of experience certificate.

You then have to ensure that your license and certificates are renewed from now and them to keep them current. The renewal, however, takes place after one or two years depending on the regulations of your state. Therefore, if you meet all the above requirements, you will be a qualified CDI, and you can thus work like all other workers.
