The Cancer Foundation Of Northeast Georgia A Beacon Of Hope In Our Society

By Donald Wood

Helping the vulnerable when needed most, the cancer foundation of northeast Georgia support the needy in their hour of extreme need. Patients soon experience the reality that their serious illness is but one issue among many serious matters that together with their families will need to be addressed.

Being informed about a cancer diagnosis is something nobody ever wishes to hear. The gravity and daunting nature of this news overshadows everything. For many, life feels like it has stopped right at that point.

Fortunately for many life does go on. The next weeks and months will rush by in a blur of visits to consultants, test after test and and then, unbelievably, more tests. Scans, radiography, discussions around treatment plans, more consultants and things continue as if there is no end.

It was said that for some life seems to stop right at that moment of diagnosis. One thing that does not stop, however, is the day-to-day aspects of modern life including financial matters, because bills and accounts to be paid will certainly not stop arriving. Many of us do not have the luxury of critical illness insurance cover or work for companies that offer long term incapacity benefits.

The reality is the bond on a house or the rental on the property still has to be made. Gas, power, and water bills still come in the mail, credit cards payments have to be made, appliances need repair, transport costs accrue and the money treadmill of modern life trundles on undaunted. It appears there is scant consideration for someone with a life threatening illness.

Time off work for ill health can be limited, and can get used up rapidly resulting in termination from a position or possibly working less. Those who run their own companies or who have gone into self-employment are especially likely to suffer. How unfair it may seem that at this time when one has such reduced capacity to handle money matters, there seems to be no let up in the problems that need to be solved. Health may well be further compromised by the additional pressures and worry brought on by these money matters.

Luckily among all the doom and gloom there is a ray of light on the horizon. Addressing the financial hardship of cancer sufferers is the primary objective of the foundation. Described by the many of 2700 people who have received help since being established in 2005, as a saving grace for seemingly insurmountable difficulties with money problems.

A nonprofit organization with a simple mission to alleviate the financial burden of cancer for eligible patients by assisting with basic needs such as housing, utilities, food and medication. Of course the charity is unable to help everyone and so has established some fair eligibility criteria. For example one has to be over eighteen and in or within six months of active treatment for a diagnosis made by a certified health care provider. There is also provision for those who have declined treatment and have been admitted to a hospice.

To be assisted it is also necessary to live within the locality of the foundation and earn below certain income levels. Details of these matters are perhaps better discussed over the phone or by visiting them on the internet. It is satisfying to know that there are those who not only see the extreme needs of others, but who are prepared to share and provide real help.
