German Shepherd Dogs commonly shortened as GSD are a popular dog breed that any dog fanatic must have heard about. The origin of this special dog breed can be traced back to the German country. Its unique physical features make it different from other dog breeds. The dog can either be kept for service or as a pet, thus making it one of the most famous dog breeds in the world. This is worth knowing about Imported German Shepherd Puppies for Sale.

GSDs are sometimes referred to by the name Alsatians. This is a name that was given to the breed by Americans and British after the Second World War. The name was given after the region of Alsace-Lorraine. The Americans and British were very hostile towards Germany given that they are the ones that started both the First and Second War.

Therefore, it was seen as a bad idea by the British and Americans to name such a wonderful dog breed after a country that started the two world wars. Nevertheless, only a few individuals are aware of the name Alsatian since most are used to referring to the dog as GSD. Actually, the English name was translated directly from the German language.

For those who would like to get a GSD puppy and raise it as a family pet, it is important to know that this is a very big breed of dog. The adult dog can be very huge, with the males growing to between 24-26 inches tall and weighing between 75 and 100 pounds. The females are comparatively smaller in size and weight and they grow to between 22 and 24 inches tall and weigh between 60 and 80 pounds.

Most individuals do not understand that GSDs were first bred to herd sheep. This is why the word shepherd is used in their name. It was during World War I when the intelligence, trainability, and protective instincts of these dogs began to be used in the war that their role changed. They began to be used as messenger, sentry, and rescue dogs.

Within a short period of time, the dogs turned out to be the most popular. They were used as narcotics and bomb detection, guide, police, military and guardian, and search and rescue dogs. Currently, their genes have become embedded with numerous temperament and health issues. Raising a stable and healthy GSD has become difficult due to these genetic problems.

The issues have led to other predominant dog breeds like Belgian Malinois and Labrador Retrievers surpassing GSD in popularity. Due to health and other issues related to GSDs, many law enforcement departments and militaries have begun finding other options for service dogs therefore moving away from the GSD. Even though its popularity is decreasing, it does not necessarily mean that using the breed has stopped completely. There are still many people who keep this breed.

When one buys a puppy, it is important to be prepared to provide all the care that the dog needs. Training should be started early in life to achieve the best results. The breed is very intelligent and highly trainable. As such, one should not have a lot of trouble getting them trained.
