By Marie Miller

Nature has many natural plants and greeneries growing in its soil. Flowers particularly add fragrances and colors to it. It heightens the aesthetics of gardens in homes and parks. When it blooms, people look forward to it as they watch its petals unfold. Curcuma flower is one flowering plant that people look forward to see.

Curcuma is a ginger kind of plant. Though it has varieties of its own, it generally is a tropical and summer loving plant. One variety you can care for is curcuma alismatifolia. It is commonly known by its generic name, Siam tulip. This is one of the popular specie of curcuma due to its ability to grown indoors.

Though native to Thailand, foreigners have brought its seed to their home country to plant. They like to watch its stately and elegant structure. They like to see it grow and bloom to its purple pink petals. Caring for this flower is very easy to handle and do.

In its caring process, you have to remember that it grows as a tropical plant. So, it needs to be exposed to sunlight. Direct heat does is not required. You only have to place it near balconies and windowsills. When sun is blocked due to darkened clouds and heavy rain, artificial lights can be used. Place it under the lights directly and leave it there for sixteen hours each day.

Sometimes it happens that the soil gets dried out due to too much heat. When this occurs, replace them under partial shades. That way, you keep its soil moist that helps it in its growth. One benefit of placing it under shades is it will hold its health pretty well to drying conditions.

These flowers flourish when environment is humid. Thus, everyday, check its humidity if it is at an optimal fifty degrees and above temperature. If it drops, use a pebble tray or room humidifier to raise the humidity to the ideal level. In effect, soil moisture is kept and maintained to levels ideal for flower growth and development.

The flowers need well drained and moist soils like humus. It is because of the organic matters found in its compositions such as compost. When the soil you are using is high in clay and sand contents, add organic matters in it before putting the flower in the pot. Fertilize it regularly, especially in summer and spring. Generic fertilizers will do here.

Drainage holes are a requirement for the pots you are using. If not, then you have flowers swimming in excess water and have offshoots or rhizomes rotting in the soil. Water should be poured in moderate amounts to prevent this from happening. It is enough to keep and retain soil moisture each week.

When winter comes, the Siam Tulips will turn dormant in order to rest. Before the winter months, do not fertilize the soil anymore and do not water the plants. Allow its leaves to turn yellow and die naturally. Once spring is in bloom, they will grow again and will resume its normal cycle. As this season beings, replace the rhizomes into fresh soil mix, as well as resuming your care for them.
