The Parousia As Mentioned In The Bible

By Janet Thomas

If one is a Christian or has at least studied the Bible, then he or she will know about the second coming of Christ. This is also known as the Parousia which is the Greek word for coming and refers to what is known as the second coming of the Christ. This pertains to the return of the savior Jesus Christ on earth when the world will be coming to an end.

Now, one of the more interesting things about this event is that it may refer to two instances wherein Jesus returns to earth. With that, it is actually a vague event that may be up for interpretation. These two possible events refer to the rapture event and the actual second return of Christ to the throne.

The first event that one should take a look at would be the rapture which is further discussed in the book of Thessalonians. According to the book of Thessalonians, the Christ will be descending to earth from Heaven to take back all of his children and bring them to Heaven. The ones who did not believe in Christ will be left behind and have to suffer a deadly seven year tribulation.

Specifically, the verse states that Jesus will come down from the sky accompanied by an archangel. Upon the sound of the trumpet of God, the believers will ascend to heaven and Jesus will return with them. This would mark the start of the seven year tribulation where the remaining people would experience wars, famine, and sicknesses.

Now, one should take note that Satan is somehow not mentioned or even reference in this event. The emphasis would be more on the entities that serve his purpose during this event such as the antichrist and also the false prophet. The job of these entities would be to sway the people away from believing in Christ and gathering an army for the Devil in preparation for Armageddon.

Now, the other return of Christ that the Bible refers to would be the actual second coming of Christ which can be found at length in Revelations. According to the book of Revelations, Jesus will directly ascend from Heaven onto earth and defeat all his enemies. There will be a big heavenly war which will result in Christ taking back the throne.

It is in this book that one will see the reference of Satan. The book of Revelations states that Satan will try to amass an entire army to try to resist the return of Jesus Christ but will ultimately lose the battle. In this story, Satan will be bound and banished to hell for all eternity.

So as one can see, the coming does not necessarily refer to just one event in the Bible. There are two separate times when Jesus will come back to earth in order to save his people. While most Christian researchers would justify that the coming refers to the second event since that is the event where Jesus really comes to earth to defend it, others would state that the first event is also technically a coming of Christ and may be considered depending on the context.
