7 Tips to Reduce Your Electricity Bill

By Samuel Brooks

To get cheaper electricity would be amazing, right? For most, electricity bills cost hundreds per month. The worst part is, most families are gone the majority of the day. It's only natural to wonder why the bill is so large. thankfully, there are some convenient ways to reduce your electricity bill right now.

1. Drain the Water Heater - At least once or twice per year, draining the water at the bottom of your hot water heater will ensure that your water continues to stay warm. Individuals who do not drain the water from their water heater will surely suffer due to buildup. This will cause your heater to work harder to warm the water, using more energy, and ultimately, costing you more money.

2. Use Dimming Bulbs - For cheaper electricity, it's best to use less power. Instead of lighting up your entire room with your traditional light bulb, install a dimming system with bulbs that adjust in brightness and dimness. While this may cost a little bit in the beginning, you can quickly make up for money spent though money saved over the coming months.

3. Double or Triple Glaze Your Windows - Without coating your windows, your heat and air will escape, causing your system to work overtime. In the end, you may notice that your utility bill is 50 percent higher than it would have been otherwise. In short, it's best to double glaze or triple glaze your windows.

4. Caulking and Repairing - To reduce electricity bill, find out if there any areas in your home where air could possibly leak out, it's best to take care of those first. You may need to use caulk and work on repairing any holes in your wall or flooring. Obviously, open spaces will affect your air flow more than anything else.

5. Insulation - Is your home well-insulated? No matter how much you want to achieve cheaper electricity, if your home is not well-insulated, your bill will still increase. The best way to solve this problem is to either move into a home where there is more insulation, or hire a professional to check the insulation levels and properly insulate the home.

6. Air Unit Placement - Did you know that if your air unit is placed in an area where there is a lot of sunlight, it will be forced to work overtime? To reduce your electricity bill, place your air unit in a relatively shaded area. However, be sure that it is not too shaded or covered, as it will also cause a problem. Moderately shaded is sufficient enough.

7. Closing Vents, Setting Thermostat - For maximum savings, be sure to close vents in rooms that you do not use. You might also want to shut the doors as well. You won't have to leave your heating/cooling unit running for long, and you'll reap the comfort benefits much sooner. In addition, when it comes to cooler air, always leave the thermostat as high as you can withstand without being uncomfortable.
