The Benefits Of Playing With Old Fashioned Wooden Toys

By Bertha Wells

One of the fondest memories of childhood was when your parents bought you a new toy. The joy of receiving the toy came with the excitement when you could push a button and the toy would make a sound or play a visual on the screen. In the old days, old fashioned wooden toys were very popular among children. There was something special about playing with an old wooden toy as they had a certain charm and brought an air of nostalgia. Such toys today are considered as antiques but are still used for amusement as well.

As much as modern toys were a great demand among children, they were not always sustainable. In some cases they required the operation by using batteries which would not last for a long period and which needed to be replaced. Often when the product stopped working, they were eventually thrown away.Another disadvantage to them was the high cost of the product at the time when it was popular.

During the nineteenth century, traditional play items made of wood were first crafted. They provided amusement as well as a great learning experience for the individual and were most suitable for the cognitive development of children. Such toys helped with providing knowledge, stimulated interaction, exploration and encourages them to use their imagination.

The market today is filled with bright coloured plastic products which emulate beeping sounds, present electronic visuals and are battery usable. These products attract the immediate attention of kids but to a certain extent as they require often to replace the batteries when they have stopped working. Such play items come with warning labels printed on them which warn of potential hazards as they need to meet certain safety requirements. As for the old fashioned objects of play, they are made from natural wood and are considered safer.

Nowadays, old fashioned models are a classic item and have gained much recognition. Due to this, they have become a favourite among children, adults and toy collectors. The types of handcrafted models which existed in the past consisted of puppets, rocking horses, yo yo and toy trucks.

Traditional games made of wood were built mainly for the development of the memory and encouraged reasonable thinking. Jigsaw puzzles and construction games were designed to stimulate the child to think harder and experience the process of creation helping the child to use his or her imagination.

The advantages of antique play items are that they provide a learning experience and boosts the individuals creativity. Instead of pushing a button and letting the electronic toy do the thinking, the more antique items pushes the individual to make an extra effort to think harder, thus, supporting the development of skills. In addition, they last longer than the modern play models and can be passed on from generation to generation. The old wooden models can be purchased at a store or online through companies which produce them.

If you know someone who loves old toys, you can surprise him or her by buying a toy as a gift. Old fashioned wooden toys are carefully crafted and still retain their charm simply because these items inspire creativity and never cease to surprise the individual. Items such as these are considered to be precious.
