Driving anywhere in the United States is illegal unless you have a driver license. The majority of drivers will only need a regular license but commercial drivers are required to meet additional standards. Florida DMV is the agency that issues drivers licenses, they also suspend and revoke the licenses of drivers that have committed some types of crimes.

In the United States you must have a driver license in order to operate a vehicle. Each state has its own rules but they are mainly uniform and recognized in other states. In Florida, the Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles is responsible for issuing licenses and registrations. They are also over State Troopers, who are responsible for patrolling all the highway system.

The state issues several different types of licenses. The majority of them are a Class E, which is all most people will need. This allows you to drive a vehicle under 26,001 pounds, which covers passenger cars and trucks. It also covers 15 passenger vans. Class E does have some restrictions for under aged drivers and those that are still learners. Also, people who move into the state then you must get a license in 30 days.

If driving a two or three wheel vehicle that is under 50 cc then you only need a Class E license. This includes both mopeds and scooters. However, the larger motorcycles require a specific endorsement that will allow you to drive it. Also, there are other restrictions for some types of drivers, such as those that need glasses and hearing aids.

There are also three classes of commercial licenses; Class A is for trucks or combinations that weight 26,001 or more. Class B is for straight trucks that weight 26,001 or more. Class C is for any vehicle that carries either hazardous materials or more than 15 persons. If you are convicted of driving under the influence then your commercial driver license will be revoked for at least one year; this will also happen if you refuse to take a sobriety test.

Even a Class E driver can easily lose his driving privileges in the state. Licenses are suspended or revoked for not paying traffic tickets and for under the influence. Also, if you do not pay child support it could be suspended. Too many tickets in a short time can also cost you your license as well as habitual traffic offender designation and any violation that causes serious injuries or death.

Insurance requirements are also taken very seriously; all vehicles must carry minimum amounts of coverage. If you fail to carry the insurance then your license could be suspended. These requirements include personal injury protection of at least $10,000 and property damage liability also at least $10,000.

Small scooters are very popular in the south, but many people may not realize that the Florida DMV requires a license to drive them. If they are under 50 cc then you will only need a regular license, if it is larger than you need a motorcycle endorsement. It is also extremely important that you carry the proper insurance on all vehicles you own.
