Unique Window Treatments Make Your Design Statement

By Liliana Mills

Home decorating involves many different aspects. One of these is designs and styles on windows. Though you can get standard ones in local stores, and can even get customized ones in some stores. However, to make a strong statement, going with unique window treatments is the way to go. You will have something that no one else has, meaning your personal decorating style is portrayed in this way.

Window decorating includes such things as blinds, drapes, curtains, and screens made of different fabrics. Cornice boards are another design element that depicts personal style. Formal or informal, the look can match the individual's preference. Color schemes are monochromatic, complementary, or harmonizing hues from the color wheel. No matter what style is used, this is one area that makes a look individual.

Solids or prints, plaids, or stripes are all designs of fabrics that give different looks. Using construction elements like pleats or gathers can give an entirely different look to the same fabric. In this way, an individual look is possible. Though there are only so many different designs, varying styles and colors means an individual look is possible. For example, one person may use a print on the cornice board with solid panels, while another might use a solid fabric for the cornice and a print for the panels.

Blinds can be wooden, or acrylic style. They can be vertical or horizontal. There are also fabric blinds, or shades. These can be Roman or other roller styles. The acrylic styles come in almost any imaginable color, from soft pastels to deep, rich formal colors. They also come in fun-loving colors and looks. They have the added advantage of providing light and temperature control.

Embellishments also add design features that make individual looks. There are beads, bows, or other baubles. If such is not your style, there are fringes and rope tie backs. These often use blended hues, but can also be contrasted in hue to add a special look. Embroidery is another detail that is used for many looks. Adding lace sheers or other layers under the main layer can change a look completely.

Function and personal taste both combine to dictate style decisions. Even though a person is not confined to traditional looks for any particular room, function does make a difference. When choosing a style for a particular room, like a kitchen or family room, you will probably want to avoid heavy pleated draperies. They will be more suited to a formal living room than other rooms.

The home is a very personal thing. People have their own ideas about what they want for interior design. Colors, style, and utility are all decisions that must be taken into account when making decorating design statements. No person can make these decisions for another. Professionals do give advice and guidance, but ultimately design decisions belong to the homeowner.

Unique window treatments are not the only element in design, but they are a very important one. Carefully choosing decorating features mean more likelihood for satisfaction with the style chosen. Personal preferences are most significant in the home and provide great satisfaction.
