An As9100 Consultant Helps Streamline Aviation Companies While Facilitating Certification

By Judy Sullivan

The aviation business is an exciting but challenging place, and as has been often noted, the only constant seems to be change. How one manages the implementation of new processes, or even decides if that is the correct step can make or break an organization. With the help of an as9100 consultant, a corporation can gain ISO certification and change their future for the better.

No matter what business one is involved with a major event to change direction or significantly alter the way operations are conducted. Part of this is the old adage that if something is working, one should leave it alone. Competition, however, renders that adage moot, as others are constantly looking for ways to do the same thing better, faster or at a lower price.

This creates two problems, for the company, it means one must stay alert and agile to stay relevant, for the consumer, it means worry that safety or quality will be compromised. As long as customers can rely on the consistency of service airlines produce, there is no concern, and that is the genesis of global voluntary standardization, certified independently.

ISO is an organization comprised of the national standards bodies of over 150 countries. They address the need for internationally accepted levels of equality of products and services regarding fitness for purpose and safety. Every country has a unique academic, cultural and political approach even when the subject is science, with differing assumptions and conclusions about many things, making such guidelines challenging to produce.

The organization has been producing agreements ever since, but the quality management movement created a more receptive environment. Once the ISO 9000 series were published in 1987, they received international approval, and the option to neglect them faded. Now competitors and the consuming public are aware of the standards and companies go without certification at their peril.

The quality movement has proven that a careful look at complex processes often yields simple, inexpensive changes that make immediate improvements. These may be jobs regularly done that do not make a significant contribution to the product or service. With as many independent events that must combine to produce air travel, there are bound to be such opportunities.

The process will require a top to bottom analysis of every process in the company, with an eye towards efficiency. In addition, any change must be introduced without disturbing the existing process, so workers and leaders can see the new process from beginning to established norm. Often it is better to have outside assistance to make this happen.

After all processes are documented, the next step is to look at each with a new vision, one that asks the question, what does this do to improve the product or service, and can it be done faster, cheaper or better. An often neglected piece of this is whether some steps can be outsourced altogether. An as9100 consultant is skilled at this effort, and can eliminate missteps and conflict during the endeavor to be the best.
