The East Bay: Fairs, Festivals & Fun

By Madeleine Glazier

While San Francisco and Oakland certainly have their fair share of attractions and annual events, for residents of Alameda or Contra Costa County, there are plenty of fun festivals and celebrations that are held throughout the year. Here are a just a few events you might wish to attend.

Walnut Creek was so named because of the abundance of native California walnut trees. So it is hardly surprising to find that the town hosts a popular yearly Walnut Festival. The festival actually was once known as the Grape Festival but during prohibition, the farmers began growing walnut trees and harvesting walnuts instead. The Walnut Festival, which takes place each year in September, includes a 5K-10K run, a popular twilight parade, a carnival and much more.

If it is a jazz hotspot you want, check out Concord. This is where the famous jazz musician Dave Brubeck hailed from and a park in town was in fact named after the "Take Five" artist. It is in Concord as well that Concord Records was founded which initially catered to jazz artists only. The Concord Jazz Festival was consequently founded by Concord Record's founder Carl Jefferson. Since 1969 this has been a yearly event that is embraced by many as a highly popular tradition.

While it's far from Hollywood, the East Bay still is home to many interesting film festivals. The historic Orinda Theatre, for instance, has hosted both the Orinda Film Festival as well the California Independent Film Festival. The Danville International Children's Film Festival has been a popular annual event in the town of Danville. Of course, there are also several film festivals in Berkeley and Oakland.

A wide variety of events are being held in annual county fairs on both counties. Come mid-June, until roughly after the Fourth of July you will find the annual Alameda County Fair which showcases petting zoo, livestock and small animal exhibits and of course lots of live music, the arts and crafts as well as several contests and competitions for people of different ages. As for the fair in Contra Costa County, this four-day affair takes place in early June and you are likely to find live music, livestock exhibits, cooking contests, monkey shows and a carnival.
