Discover Mosquito Lagoon With New Smyrna Beach Charter Packages

By Guy Stannard

East Central Florida is an amazing location with the best and most versatile angling options found throughout the United States. Whether one enjoys saltwater, freshwater or brackish, all three are readily available. A Daytona Beach fishing charter company is the perfect way to experience all of these excellent choices that are being offered.

There are other qualities that make this particular part of Florida stand out as unique. Mosquito Lagoon is perhaps a top spot chosen by tourists and locals, avid anglers and novice fishermen, alike. Its location at the most northern end of the beautiful Indian River in lovely Volusia County is actually what gives it such a unique appeal.

This body of water is positioned so that it is part of both Canaveral National Seashore and Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge. Being nestled in these two parcels of more than 167,000 combined acres of protected land means that this location is perhaps one of Florida's least developed zones. It is filled with wildlife and fish species.

The unique conditions of this region work together to allow easy success for novices and casual fishers, yet still give the seasoned angler a sporting challenge. Due to the tidal flows, the water here moves slower, is more shallow and surprisingly clear. This makes casting easier because the fish can be seen without much effort.

The salinity levels allow quite a few species that would normally spawn in open water do so here. This is one of very few places on Earth where the rare combination of five different types of sea grass, Red Mangrove and Spartina all flourish in the same ecosystem. Tarpon, flounder, grouper, spotted sea trout, large mouth bass, crappie and shad are plentiful during their seasons.

The two protected wildlife preserves provides the opportunity to see some truly amazing sights. Living in the lagoon is a population of Atlantic bottlenose dolphins that love to get attention. One can watch stingrays glide along the shallow areas or view large groups of fish a bit further out.
