Like human beings, pets are also faced with emergencies from time to time. They range from swallowing poisonous substances, involvement in accidents or suffering from heat stroke, among others. Canine first aid saves the situation to protect your pet from fatality or the situation from worsening. Follow these tips when dealing with your dog to keep it safe during such emergencies.

Be observant about the behavior of your dog. The idea is to collect as much information within a short time to report to your veterinary doctor. Observe whether the dog is too weak to rise, depressed, breeding, having difficult breathing and any other sign of danger. When you talk to the vet, these are the signs you will be expected to provide. Check to see the source of pain if any.

Your safety and that of people around you is important. It is common for animals in pain or distress to be aggressive. Even though you are their owner, they will bite you when in distress. Remain calm and be alert around the animal. Pets reflect the reactions of their owners or handlers and may panic because you have panicked.

Get in touch with your vet before you take any action. Keep the contact details of your vet nearby at all times. When the call goes through, you will be expected to provide information based on observations you have made. Even though the vet might be away, staff at the clinic will issue directions on interventions before the vet gets to your location. A pen and paper should be nearby in case you need to take down instructions.

It is common for dogs to bite when in distress. They will even turn against their owners and handlers. A muzzle will help you restrain the dog. It is usually tied behind the ears to restrain the jaws. Do not use the muzzle if your dog displays signs of difficulty with breathing. Small pets may be restrained using the thick towel until your vet arrives.

Human medicine should not be administered to dogs. Even medicine whose use is unknown should not be administered. Only a trained vet has the permission to administer medicine. Any other person or medicine must be avoided. Further more, medicine for bee sting is different from when an animal is injured in an accident. You should only administer medicine when directed by a qualified vet.

Movement of injured pets should be restricted as much as possible. The idea is to protect injured areas from getting worse. This disturbance causes discomfort and may worsen a fracture. A board is preferred to carry your canine because it restricts movement naturally. Rush to the clinic as fast as possible to prevent the situation from getting worse.

It helps to have a pet first aid kit near you all the time. Keep such substances as surgical tapes, bandages, thick towel and sterile absorbent gauze, among others. Scissors and Elizabethan collar will also help in case of an emergency. Through you provide emergency care, the pet must be taken to the doctor as soon as possible.
