Different Uses For Excavator Attachments

By Linda White

Big machines are designed to do big jobs. There are lots of tools available for smaller jobs, but the big ones would take too long without the larger equipment. Using these machines requires special training and ability because they can work through the job quickly, but also do an enormous amount of damage if not handled properly. A good driver is able to get a bucket or hammer in exactly the right place every time and finish the job with delicacy. Having the right excavator attachments are needed to do the job correctly and efficiently.

Augers are able to dig holes quickly. There are several types, but most often are found being used by a utility company. They use them to dig holes to put electric poles up for power. They can also be used by landscapers that are in the process of planting trees and shrubbery. This will save a lot of time digging the holes and maximize the efforts.

Thumbs on buckets are great for picking up boulders. A bucket by itself works well for digging and excavating large holes. But when you come across an area that has large rocks, using the thumb attachment makes it easy to dispose of them and keep digging. Otherwise, you would have to hire a blasting company to come in an reduce the rocks to rubble before continuing.

Compactors get things ready for a foundation. If the soil needs to be compacted and you are unable to get a road roller in position, you can add the attachment to the excavator and get it in position. They can also be used when a roller isn't available and you're in the process of building a road.

Grapples are best for moving material. In some cases, you may have crates that need to be moved. The same style that is used in ports to empty ships can be used in smaller jobs in a warehouse. For scrap metal yards the grapple with teeth is used to pick up huge amounts of scrap and sort it quickly.

Jackhammers are used for breaking tough materials. They are commonly found in breaking up sidewalks and other concrete foundations. However, attached to an excavator gives the operator the ability to break through walls and work on larger jobs that would take an extremely long time with a human operator. It also removes the person from a dangerous situation.

Rippers get through tough ground quickly and easily. These are great in areas that the ground is compacted or frozen but needs to be torn up at the beginning of the process. They are great at breaking up clay as well. They can be attached at the back or front and lowered into the soil and with the forward motion of the machine, they will tear the ground into manageable chunks that can be discarded, scooped, or otherwise reduced. For a new farming area, these will be the first step in the process of preparing the soil for planting season.

Having the right tool makes any job go much easier. Using smaller tools is great for smaller jobs. But the larger jobs require getting through the work quickly, thus requiring larger tools for the job. For bigger equipment, the right attachments will make quick work of whatever job needs to be done.
