Acne Scars: Natural Alternatives to Surgery

By Kathy Roberts

Scars can be treated and removed a number of different ways. If scars are minor and not noticeable, they will fade on their own. But, if your scar is large and restrictive, you are probably going to need surgery if you want it removed.

Other than surgical treatments, scars can be minimized by using creams. This is, without a doubt, the gentlest form of treatment and a very welcomed alternative for skin that has been affected by such problems as acne.

Acne scars are usually more prevalent in those people that never treated their acne or decided to use the wrong treatment for their skin. This is why it is so important that you maintain a consistent skin care routine and use the right acne cream.

Surgical Scar Removal

Surgery is sometimes the only alternative for removing unsightly acne scars. In cases such as this there are two types of procedures that can be used: punch excision and subdermal incision or subcision. Ice pick and other atrophic scars are usually treated with punch excision while subcision is used primarily for rolling scars.

Punch excision is used to remove scar tissue by using a cookie cutter type instrument. The edges of excised skin are then sutured together to form a small straight scar. If the excised skin is too large, a skin graft is used to close the wound.

Subcision is performed by introducing a small scalpel or small scissors beneath the skin to release the upper layers of skin from the scar tissue below. This procedure cause some bruising as blood rushes in to occupy the space between the skin and scar tissue. But this is exactly what helps levels out the skin.

Non-Invasive Scar Removal Methods

Scars can also be treated using scar care gels or scar creams. You cannot use this treatment on all types of scars, but minor scars and newer scars are perfect for this treatment. Also, when you have had surgery, you can use these types of creams to promote scar less healing.

Natural scar gels and creams are made with special ingredients that help break down scars and promote the growth of new skin cells. One incredible ingredient is snail serum. This gentle natural ingredient is effective and known to help dissolve scar tissue. It also helps trigger the production of healthy skin cells while also increasing the production of elastin and collagen.

One ingredient that you should stay away from is collagen, since this doesn't help to heal scar tissue. In fact, collagen molecules are too large to penetrate our skin pores. This means that the product cannot reach the site of the scar to repair it.

Laser treatment is another viable alternative. However, it is not always the right choice for your type of scar tissue. So, before undergoing this type of treatment consult with a dermatologist to see if you are eligible for laser treatment.
