Acupuncture as a Therapy for Sinus Infections

By Jen Catigan

Many individuals suffer from sinus infections and other sinus issues. The congestion from allergies, cold weather and colds and flu can cause infection and inflammation. Most go running to the pharmacy to pick-up an over-the-counter decongestant of some sort, but many people are looking for alternatives that are easier on the body and more natural. Traditional chinese medicine, including acupuncture and herbs, is one of those alternatives that many people find it effective in the treatment of sinus issues.

When diagnosing sinus issues, they are classified as either acute or chronic, and are generally considered to be a viral infection lasting anywhere from 10-14 days. But, a large percentage of those suffering from chronic sinus infections will be plagued with headaches, low energy, pain in the teeth and jaw and nasal congestion for months on end.

Acupuncture can often offer relief from these conditions and help to clear the sinuses and boost the immune system in the process. Because of this, acupuncture can offer both short term relief and because of the increased strength of the immune system can even make future sinus infections less likely.

Bi Yan Pian is a Chinese herbal formula that is used within Traditional Chinese Medicine and is available as a patient medicine. Bi Yan Pian helps to clear the sinuses and relieve symptoms such as headaches, sore throat, itchy eyes and sneezing. This herbal formula contains magnolia flower, chrysanthemum flower and forsythia flower which are used within TCM to cool the heat in the sinuses and aid in relieving the infection.

Finally, another remedy many find effective in the treatment of sinus issues is utilization of a neti pot. Using a neti pot, body-temperature water, mixed about 1/2 to 1 teaspoon of sea salt is poured gently through one nostril and it flows through the sinuses and out the other nostril. This helps to clear the sinuses and improve overall health and energy levels in the process.
