What are the reasons why dogs eat wood

By Jerry Welsh

Dogs have come a long way - from surviving on their own in the wild, dogs are now well cared pets. Since domestication, dogs have become not only well loved pets but surrogate children of their owners . As these pampered pets are considered as pseudo people, the best doggie things that will make the pet's life comfortable will be provided by the owners. Aside from providing prime quality food for the pet, dog owners will take time to provide the dog with home cooked meals.

Unlike their ancestors, pet dogs will never go hungry. In spite of this fact, dog owners will still see the pet eating non-food items. Will you leave the dog to an animal shelter if you see that the pet has again decided to make mince meat of the antique chair's legs?

The habit of eating non-edible things is one of the common concerns of pet owners. Dogs really do have big appetites. Because dogs are much loved pets, owners make sure that the dog has enough food. However, dogs would still ingest anything that caught their fancy because these animals are indiscriminate eaters. The inquisitiveness as well as the excellent scenting ability often results to the ingestion of non-edible things.

Pet dogs will be seen eating grasses, rocks and rotten things with gusto. Feces and rotting animals will certainly be abhorrent to humans. Dog owners would naturally prefer to have a wood eating pet than one that has the inclination to feast on feces and rotting animals. The dog's propensity to eat wood would not be disgusting as the habit of eating feces but wood eating must be stopped. A pet owner would not really mind the changing the furniture eaten by the dog but what the owner will be concerned with is the danger to the dog's life. It is therefore necessary to understand why dogs eat wood. The wood eating habit of the pet must be stopped

Bored dogs will eat wood. Dogs will be destructive if attention is not given by the family because these are social animals. Wood eating can be the dog's way of attracting the attention of the family. Dog experts believe that the habit of eating wood can be associated with a nutrient deficit diet. Dogs that are fed poor quality commercial dog food would eat wood in an effort to fill up the imbalance in the system. These concerns can be easily corrected. Give the pet more attention. A premium quality dog food would be more expensive but surely it would be a more viable option than having to replace the furniture continuously.
