Impact Of Green Schools To The Environment And Students

By Cathy Mercer

With the rapid changes in the environment and quick changes in the climate, the unpredictable effects of global warming can be felt throughout the globe. This opened the eyes of the people to be more aware of the condition of the environment. This sparked the movement of green schools Westchester which promotes energy conservation and student performance.

They are more than just building where children learn many different things and being prepared to become the next generation of leaders and citizens. These schools are built to operate on clean air and sunlight and free of any harmful chemicals and toxic materials. They are built to conserve energy, lower any utility cost, conserve resources, and reduce wasted materials.

These schools promote low consumption of water by reducing it to as much as fifty percent by using dual flush toilets, waterless urinals, and low flow sinks. Rain water can be a replacement for the water used to flush and clean toilets and watering the plants. The students would be able to follow this example if they experience it personally.

The use of low emitting materials are highly advised which can help in improving the air quality in the building and the environment. Having high air quality can reduce absences due to respiratory problems such as asthma. There are a lot of materials that are made of non toxic materials such as furniture, wall systems, and ceiling tiles.

Installing large windows and skylights will allow sunlight to stream in thereby reducing the cost of energy and improves the concentration and performance of the students. They can install shades and blinds to reduce the glare of the sunlight. If the room is in place where there is no window, they can install lightshelves, which can bounce sunlight deep into the room and provide even distribution of light.

However, there are still many instances when lighting will be needed so use the right fixture that uses adequate light when installing as to improve the learning ability of the students. There are fixtures that have adjustable brightness and these are fairly great when saving costs. Another villain to health are molds which can be prevented by having low humidity and proper ventilation.

They can cause serious health concerns because they have bacteria and germs and can affect children since they have weak immune systems. Recycling programs found at school which are used directly by students can teach them responsible environmental habits. This can greatly reduce the impact on carbon footprints due to waste products.

Having green roofing can save energy since they are cooler and they provide a filter for storm water to run off. This also creates a natural habitat that can attract birds and butterflies which is a great interactive learning for kids. Facilities should also be used jointly to decrease the need for more facilities thus reducing the cost of making an additional facility.

Large windows help in ventilating the buildings thus having a cozy temperature inside the building. Putting acoustic ceiling tiles help improve the sound inside the room making it easier for the teacher to speak in class without shouting and straining their throats. Green schools Westchester are a great example of energy efficiency and environment awareness that is highly beneficial to the society.
