By Amanda Bean

Soy candles are candles that are created using soy wax. This type of wax is the processed, or hydrogenated, version of soybean oil. There are many tutorials and resources available for those interested in making homemade soy candles.

It is common for this to be held in containers because the wax melts at a point that is lower than most traditional types. This kind of wax, when mixed with specific additives, can also be made into pillar candles. Soy is usually softer than the wax known as paraffin. It also has a lower melting temperature. The soy kind may be available in pellet or flake form. Typically it has an opaque or off-white appearance. Because it has a low melting temperature, it is expected to melt in hot weather.

Some are made using many different kinds of waxes, such as beeswax, palm and paraffin. Additional ingredients may be included for candle making. The additives may include: petrolatum, pigment or dye, bht crystals, natural or artificial fragrance, stearic acid, mineral oil, luster crystals, Vybar, and ultraviolet absorbers.

There are many manufacturers who produce these candles, as well as stores that have them for sale. The cost of such products will differ based on an assortment of factors. People looking to save some money may be interested in creating their own. Some may want to do so for themselves and others may make the candles to sell or give away as gifts.

Many different companies sell the supplies needed in order to make these. Some of the items you may already own in your kitchen, such as jars. Cost of the products will vary considerably. In general, the supplies that are necessary in this do-it-yourself project: jars, thermometer, measuring cup or spouted vessel, scale, a tool to stabilize the wick, wicks, double boiler, soy wax flakes and the scent of choice. These may be different depending on the type and amount that is to be made.

There are numerous techniques that can be done for the making process. Usually an initial step is preparing jars for the candle. This is done by securing the wick to the bottom of the jar using glue and keeping the wick in place and outside of the jar. The soy wax needs to be liquified and then the fragrance can be added. Stir it all together using a spoon.

Once the wax cools down to 135 degrees, pour it into the jar that has the wick. Avoid touching it an allow it to sit for some time to get solid. After approximately an hour, it should be opaque and slightly solid. Avoid touching the wick until you know the candle has cooled completely. Once it has, you can trim the wick own to the right size. It is best if the candle is not burned for around two week after it was made. While you wait, make sure to decorate it how you like.

Homemade soy candles are relatively easy to make. These may be sold as part of a business, given to friends or family members, or kept by the maker. There are so many ways these can be customized. Most stores carry all the supplies needed for the project.
