Now That I'm Done, What Do I Do With My Degree?

By Franklin Skribbit

It is essential for anyone going through laboratory training in Colorado Springs to understand their rights to a safe working environment. The government has set up a protection agency to help you know what to expect from your workplace.

Start Applying

As an employee of the laboratory, you should understand what safety precautions you are entitled to inside the workplace. The following is a brief synopsis of the working conditions you should expect from your employer. Generally speaking, "Workers are entitled to working conditions that do not pose a risk of serious harm," according to OSHA's website. More specifically, OSHA requires the following of employers:

Make a Game Plan

You should have a clear plan on how you want to use your education. You may not be using everything that you learned in school, so you should be open to applying to a number of jobs that may seem out of your scope of education. The more open you are the more opportunities will be presented to you. It is important to have that clear picture of the future and where you want to go, as this will help you continually be moving forward just building that resume that will land you that dream job in the future.

Don't stop learning

If they want to see the safety history they can ask to review records of work-related injuries and illnesses caused by the laboratory. The employer is required to provide that. Continuing with the employer's responsibilities, employers are required to keep records of all work-related injuries and illnesses (so an employee can request them at will). If there should be an accident that is either fatal or results in the hospitalization of 3 or more employees, OSHA must be notified within 8 hours of the incident at 1-800-321-OSHA.

In today's society, you will find that more and more people are falling behind because they are the same as all of their peers. While it is good to specialize, it is also good to reach outside of your comfort zone and make sure that you have some skills that can take you to another industry completely.

Cited violations from an inspection must be posted at or near the offending work area until the violation is corrected or three working days have passed, whichever is longer. In addition, corrections must be made by the deadline given by OSHA representatives.

There are always options out there and a college degree is just the beginning to getting out there into the world. One thing to keep in mind is that even though you may not feel qualified for a position, you still need to have the confidence to apply because you never really know if the position only requires that college degree. That is the mindset you should have when you go out to the job market after graduating from Colorado Springs College.
