The Pros And Cons Of Solar Panels

By Hedrick Lepsch

Experimental architecture is fascinating because it is artistic and unique. One way that architects add flavor and style to their projects is by designing gorgeous roofs. Some of these roofs can leave us envious and wishing that we had a one like that on our home. Here is an example of how you can design a unique roof followed by some rather interesting examples of unique roofing from around the world.

Steel Roofing: A new trend in residential roofing is the usage of steel. While this may not be as interesting as some of the other roofs you have seen on the web, steel roofing still has a beautiful look to it. It certainly looks better than the classic shingle roofing as well as the tile you see in warmer parts of the world.

So not only is solar power ready for large-scale use in homes across the nation, but likewise the practical applications of solar panels on the home can become a benefit to those homeowners who invest in the technology. There are, however, drawbacks to using solar power in the home, so before a homeowner makes the investment on new solar paneling for their home's energy they should first take the time to learn all they can about both the positives and the negatives of solar panels on the home.

Not using something? Unplug it. Almost everybody hears the advice to just turn off the lights in a room. That makes a difference. However, light bulbs are more efficient now than they used to be, so it's not going to equate to saving as much as it used to. So if you're not using an appliance or something like that, unplug it. A little bit of power going to a dozen different gadgets can add up.

Bag End in Switzerland: Homes built into hills do exist outside of The Lord of Rings books. In Switzerland, people sometimes build their homes underneath hills. The grassy roofs have a spectacular look to them and the cool earth surrounding the home helps keep the entire place cool during the hot summer months.

Because there are very few inhabited places on earth that have direct sunlight every day of the year, the reality of solar powered homes is that at times they will be short on power. The costs of maintenance for the solar panels is low, but maintenance for the entire solar power system can be seen as a draw back for some as there are near constant maintenance duties.

Hotel Marqus de Riscal: Here is some architecture that is pleasing to the eye. This hotel was designed by Frank Gehry (designer of the Guggenheim) and is located in Alava, Spain. The whole roof structure is designed to look like steel ribbons.

The effect is absolutely breathtaking and is one of the finest examples of fine roofing architecture in existence. While you may not be able to smash a shark through your ceiling, or create elegant steel ribbons on your roof, at least you can see how the ideas turn out on other buildings. Let these ideas inspire you to take creative steps in your home design and dcor!
