Tips For Choosing A Patent Agent In New York City

By Imelda Reid

There is usually an idea or product people see that makes them wonder why they did not think of it first. Sometimes a lucky person is the creator who makes that genius invention that makes the life of millions of people that much easier or creates the must have toy that all the kids want at Christmas and so forth. If you want that brilliant idea protected then it is worth choosing the right patent agent in New York City.

Before contacting an agent it is worth doing some research yourself. Check to see if anyone has come up with a similar idea. Ideally this should be done before you have put any money into design or developing prototypes as this will resulted in both wasted time and wasted money.

Another reason is to ensure that there are not products like yours already. It can be very embarrassing to spend a lot of money developing a product only to find that one just like it already exists and is already patented. It may sound obvious but this is something that people do miss!

Before you talk to an agency you need to do your research. Ideally the research phase should happen before developing prototypes and so forth. Check to see if there are any other products out there in the market that are similar and consider whether or not you wish to proceed with an application.

While anyone could put through a patent there are differing rules that require different approaches depending on the industry involved. Therefore while someone may handle a wide array of applications you are often better off seeking a specialist who knows the particular market that you are looking to target.

You should also do background research on a company before you contact them. Find out whether or not people found them to be reliable. It also helps to talk with previous clients to find names of the appropriate representatives within that particular company who will be best suited to your particular needs.

An agent should talk to you and tell you what they would do to represent you. Ideally they should also be direct and honest. You do not want someone who will take your money and push through an application only for you to find out someone has already patented a similar thing and you have wasted time and money in the process.

Another side of this is to trust your instincts. If you have worked hard producing a product and have done all the necessary research then you need to be wary. Ultimately if you do not feel comfortable when talking to someone who might be representing you then it is probably best to seek alternative options. With a sensible approach you will find the right patent agent that will work for you.
