Pajama Pants - How To Maintain The Like-New Look Of Cotton Pajama Pants

By Cassie Clayborn

Cotton is a great material for pajama pants and lounge pants because it is soft and easy to care for. A durable fabric, it is easy to wash and dry. The best thing to do when caring for your cotton clothing is to follow the manufacturer's instructions on the garment tag. However, if the tag has been removed or is now unreadable, here are some general guidelines for caring for cotton clothing. But it's also smart to use your own common sense. I am not responsible for issues that may occur when caring for your clothing.

Cotton is very easy to dye since it is a natural fiber. Therefore, the first thing to do is to take the light colored clothing and set it apart from the dark colored clothing. It's easy to think, when a colored piece has been washed several times, that it won't make a difference to wash it with the light clothing. However, when colors are washed together with white clothes, the white clothing often ends up with a dingy look after a few loads. So keep your white clothing separate and wash them in their own load. Set the washing machine's water temperature to warm when cleaning your cotton pajama pants and lounge pants.

If it's been preshrunk, then a cotton garment is safe to put into the dryer. But if the garment has not been preshrunk, then there's a risk of it shrinking to where it won't fit properly. When you're not sure if your pajama pants have been preshrunk, the safest thing to do is assume that they have not been. You don't want to find your freshly dried pants are now too tight or sport hems coming up to mid-calf. If you machine dry your pajama pants, then tumble dry them on low. If you don't know and don't want to risk it, then hang them on a clothesline. If you have no clothesline, use the shower curtain rod or a drying rack, instead.

Remove the garment from the dryer soon after drying to keep it from wrinkling. But if you do leave them in the dryer too long and they wrinkle, don't worry. Those wrinkles will come out easily with an iron. Most irons have a "cotton" setting. If you have a steam iron, it'll be one of the settings that use steam. If you don't have a steam iron, dampen the garment with a spray bottle of water before ironing.

These are just the most basic points to washing and caring for cotton pajama pants and other clothes. However, the construction of the garment or the trim on it can make the care instructions a little different. Because of this, it is important to learn the ideal way to take care of your clothes.
