Caring for your watch strap

By Harry Coleman

Many people feel that when it comes to looking after your watch it's all about the watch face, as this is the most presentable and noticeable part of your watch it's also one that many people choose to focus on. Helping to hold your watch face in place and providing a great accessory to complement it at the same time, your watch strap is also a crucial part of the design and needs a great deal of care.

Making sure that you take good care of your watch strap can help to easily extend the lifespan of your watch and leave you safe in the knowledge that your watch face is held tightly to your wrist, especially if your watch is one of your most treasured possessions.

There are many substances which can cause potential damage and/or problems to your watch strap and it's important that you keep your strap away from these substances where this is possible as this can cause a great deal of wear. Common items that you would wear including perfumes and moisturisers can be potentially harmful and you should try to avoid wearing these chemicals around your watch strap.

It's important to keep your watch away from direct sunlight if you are trying to avoid discolouration, particularly on gold or silver plated designs. The strong rays of the sun can cause the strap to easily discolour and fade away. Perspiration can also cause the same effect and in summer it can be a good idea to make sure that you loosen your watch strap to prevent this from happening.

If your watch does become damp due to perspiration or contact with water, ensure that you leave it in an area where it can easily dry out. If you leave your watch in a confined space where it does not have the ability to dry then it could cause a great deal of damage to the strap. It's also important to wipe your watch clean of any chemicals or liquids that may have come into contact with it before you store it.
