Palm Springs Walk of Stars
On a recent trip to the California desert, when I arrived in the beautiful downtown area of Palm Springs in the sunny Coachella Valley, my eyes were quick to notice the ingrained stars that dotted the sidewalk area, stretching from the north side to the south side of famed Palm Canyon Drive, Museum Way and Tahquitz Canyon Way in the heart of the downtown.
The Palm Springs Walk of Stars, as they are known, are marble inlaid stars memorialize over 300 celebrities who have lived and played in this desert paradise which has become known as the" Playground of the Stars."
Every year a number of celebrities is added by a selection committee which continues to enlarge the site so that today it moves, curves, and bends its way by various clothing shops, restaurants, museums, theatres, and resort hotels that cover the downtown Palm Springs area.
The Palm Springs Walk of Stars is dedicated to the many Hollywood stars who lived, loved, played and gave back to the gorgeous desert oasis that is filled with palm trees, sunshine and abundant golf courses.
While strolling down Palm Canyon Drive on a beautiful desert day, I was able to see such stars names set in t concrete as singer Al Jolson, actress Ginger Rogers and comedian Bob Hope who to this day has a very popular golf tournament that takes place each year in the desert.
Early on film pioneer and desert resident Mary Pickford was added to the sidewalk along with such stars as Liberace, Sophia Loren and Elizabeth Taylor. Of course one of Palm Springs most famous residents, Old Blue eyes himself Frank Sinatra is immortalized. In later years, Alan Ladd and the gorgeous Marilyn Monroe became part of the sidewalk that thousands of people cross over each day with the names that look up at you as you enjoy the beautiful village that is Palm Springs.
In recent years James Earl Jones, Mickey Rooney former Palm Springs mayor, Sonny Bono, and Dinah Shore have been added to the luminaries that line the street.
Seeing these names brought a rush of thoughts and I could only imagine what a glorious time this must have been, when the stars would travel here and light up the desert with fun and glamour, bringing a piece of tinsel town to the valley and sharing it with its residents..
Over the years more name have been added, entertainers like Leslie Nielson, George Lopez, Chevy Chase, Debbie Reynolds, Carol Channing, Rock Hudson, and Dick van Patten, as well as dignitaries such as President Gerald Ford and Ronald Reagan.
There were other names that I did not recognize at first, but once I became familiar with them and their works, was able to see they were a celebrity in their own field and just as noteworthy to be a part of the walk in Palm Springs. Some of the stars I knew, some by name and some by performance and deed. But what stood out as I walked around and spotted each sparkling, glossy star was the connection between this desert oasis and Hollywood.
The Palm Springs Walk of Stars is a trip down memory lane and a perfect way to spend a day on your next Palm Springs vacation.
