Get To The Reason Behind Your Emotional Overeating

By Bill Heath

If your overeating is caused by your emotions, you seem so out of control as your body gains more weight. You'll feel like you simply can't solve your eating disorder. Your self-esteem and self-confidence may have eroded to the point where you're withdrawing from those you love and you don't feel like going out to have fun.

Triggers for certain foods can cause emotional overeating. Chronic overeating is an addiction just like the ones we're used to hearing about - drugs, alcohol and even sex.

You have to find the root cause of an addiction before you can do anything to solve it. A few reasons why emotional overeating may become an addiction are:

Heredity. Your ancestors may be the cause of your addiction. If you can prove that you have ancestors who have the same eating disorder as you do, then genetics is the cause.

Behaviour patterns from childhood. When you were a child, your parents may have encouraged you to "clean your plate" (after all, there are starving children in the world). Treats like fast food and sweets may have been their way of showing their affection. Because of this, you may feel compelled to eat everything in front of you - and show love for yourself by eating what makes you feel good.

Anxiety. This is a really bad cause for overeating. Of course, no life is stress-free, but you can do something to minimize your daily stress. If you skip breakfast because you rise late, then eat too much during lunch, then you can remedy this by waking up earlier to eat breakfast.

Intense cravings. Cravings are usually caused by a deficiency in your diet. If your food intake is high in salt, fat and carbs, you may experience a decrease in vital nutrients that your body needs to help stave off cravings. You could also be lethargic and bypass exercise, which is critical to losing weight and releasing endorphins that promote a sense of well-being.

Emotional overeating involves trying to replace something in you with food. Finding out what's missing is the only solution to your emotional overeating problem. The root cause can be easily determined by yourself, but it can also require you to seek help.
