How to Choose A Keynote Speaker For An Event

By Thurman Mitch Owens

Whether it's an event or conference you are planning you may look at hiring a keynote speaker. There are several speakers at most events and conferences. A keynote speaker is the highlight speaker. A bit like the main band at a gig!

The reasons you are choosing a keynote speaker weighs on a lot of decisions. Who is it that will be coming to the event? Who are you expecting? Are they business people? Are you expecting members of the public? Are they part of a particular niche? As an example, you might have sales people attending. Think, would a sports speaker match their needs? On the other hand, what about a sales speaker? What about a motivational speaker to gear up sales staff?

Selecting the right keynote speaker can be difficult. Generally, there are two methods to find a keynote speaker. You could go direct. If for example you wanted a sports speaker for an opening of a new venue, you could contact their agent directly. Everybody has a website now- who doesn't? Find a contact by typing their name into Google.

Don't pick a speaker too quickly

Why go for the first speaker you come across? Speaking and after dinner speeches is a growing industry. You wouldn't believe for example the amount of retired sports stars that take on a career of making keynote speeches. Back to choosing a keynote speaker, do your research on the speaker- find out about them. For example, you don't really want a speaker that makes blue jokes at an event arranged for children!

File down your speakers

Try and make a short list of under ten. Now you have a good selection, but not too many speakers. You can contact each speaker then and ask about about their pricing and availability.

Why should I go through an agency?

A different approach is going through an agency. Keynote speakers are the speciality of a keynote speakers agency. They can find the right speaker for you and help with the negotiations. This knowledge and expertise is invaluable. You can fill in the agent on what type of speaker you want, and instead of you doing the research, they can then match the speaker to your event, taking out the hard work.

Organising the event

Good organisation is the key to any successful event. A reliable speaker and strict itinerary are a must. Having the relevant contracts in place is also paramount. Imagine having your event organised, and on the day the speaker does not show? Doing this properly and using an agency can help avoid this.

Whether you are organising an event or conference, try and enjoy the day. And remember - choosing the right person is crucial to a successful impression on your clients.
