By Jet Hugher

Asthma inhalers are used by many, adults or children to provide medications to the lungs and aid asthma. Since there are plenty of available asthma inhalers, others are not sure which one to use. You must find one that suits you best because you will need it for a proper asthma treatment in the form of medications.

Asthma Inhaler Types

The Metered-dose inhalers come in a pressurized container with a plastic nozzle. The medication is placed on the container and the patient will have to push the tank to release it and inhale it to the lungs. There are those that have counters that lets you know of the remaining doses but if your inhaler does not have one then you can just take note of how many doses you have already used.

Metered dose inhaler with a spacer is a bit different since it has a separator which holds the drug first after it has been released. This method will give more time to the patient to breathe on a regular rate and in this manner more medication goes to the lungs than the amount left at the back of the throat. Not all inhalers has a spacer, others attach a separate splitter.

Unlike the other types, dry powder inhaler does not have to be pressed to let the medication out instead it works by deep breathing inhalation. In order for the medicine to reach the lungs, you will have to take a deep breath into the mouthpiece. This type includes the dry powder inhaler tube, the powder disk inhaler, and the single dose disk inhaler. The idea is to take a deep breath and inhale and not blow before inhalation because moisture from your breath may affect the performance of the device.

The Nebulizers are famous asthma inhalers that uses a machine connected to a fine tube attached to mask or nozzle. The medication will be delivered through the tube and the patient will just have to breathe in a normal way, no hassles. This type is beneficial especially for children and those that have severe or acute asthma. This is also used as substitute if the patient cannot use the MDI or DPI. However, the nebulizer takes about 15 minutes to use that is enough time to use up the dose of medication.

Asthma Heath Reminders

Even when there are no symptoms felt, inhaled medications will still have to be taken because it is meant to keep the airways healthy.

You can ask your physician about the right inhaler to use. You will probably get the best explanation.

As mentioned, the types of asthma inhalers used to give medication to the lungs are metered-dose inhalers, dry powder inhalers, and nebulizers.

Proper use of any asthma inhaler is essential for you to receive the right amount of inhaled medication and keep asthma under control.

There are many factors to be considered in looking for the right asthma inhaler like for example some drugs are not compatible with other types of inhalers. Consult your physician about this matter to ensure that your needs will be met by the right asthma inhaler.
