Before you expend loads on money on a new Laptop or computer, read on. So what can you try?

Defragmenting your disk

Windows 7 has improved tremendously since Windows XP, but it could still suffer from disk fragmentation with time. New programs get installed as well as old ones get removed, which means that a single program could reside on disparate areas of the disk, causing inefficient read and write times. Carrying out a defrag organizes all the applications back together again on the disk, so the disk head has less distance to travel.

You could perform it put simply:

Just type 'defrag' in to the command line soon after clicking on the Start menu, or even access via Start - Programs - Accessories - System Tools. Click on the 'disk defragmenter' icon. In the utility window, check the % fragmentation of the C: drive is (it's only the C: drive that's crucial, you can ignore the other drives).

Whether it's greater than 10% then you need to defrag. Remember to close all your applications first, and ideally commence it last thing at night as it could take some time to finish.

You must only have to do this a few times a year.
