When we look back on the history of this item we can find that it can be dated back to the time of King Arthur. Back then the shield as it also referred to was used as a weapon to protect the knights. This is when it was first known as the shield of authority.

The knights of the round table were also the first police force we are aware of. Their job was to uphold the laws of the king and protect the citizens of the local communities. The men that held these positions of authority had to possess certain qualities in order to attain this kind of position. They had to be trustworthy, honest and of good moral character to even be considered for a position of this kind.

There are certain standards that are followed in the design of the shield we see today. They are generally of a certain height of approximately 2.5 to 3 inches. This is an approximation only and can vary a bit for some reasons, one being that of the locale of the police department using them.

Back in the year 2000, a law was passed with reference to the shield. It stated that it was a federal offense to possess, ship or collect these items except in special circumstances. This is very important to look into if you are a collector of shields as you do not want to deal with legal issues down the road.

Originally the Police Badges that we see today were made from copper. Now they can be made out of a combination of different metals.
