Cellulite Treatment - Scientific Study On Weight Loss

By Dr. Elizabeth Clark

The dogma of most cellulite treatment protocols often points to weight loss as a way to help with cellulite removal. Scientific studies reveal another story about how effective this strategy might be.

Cellulite Treatment Research

Can cellulite removal really be improved by weight loss? This question was the starting point for a study out of the Skin Sciences Institute, University of Cincinnati. The full research study was published under the title, 'Effect of weight loss on cellulite: gynoid lypodystrophy', in the journall, Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery (Plast Reconstr Surg. 2006 Aug;118(2):510-6).

Don't let the fancy title throw you. It just refers to cellulite and weight loss. The key prediction is that weight loss will improve the severity of cellulite. People assume that it will, although the science behind this assumption has been scant.

The published study is laden with technical jargon. The overall results, however, were a bit surprising. Most women got better, as predicted. The condition for many others, unfortunately, got worse.

Several factors seemed important in those who improved: 1) greater initial severity of cellulite; 2) greater reduction of thigh fat percentage; 3) greater weight loss; and, 4) higher starting body mass index. Apparently, therefore, those who were worse off in the beginning had a greater chance for improvement.

For women who were better off in the first place, their cellulite actually got worse. These subjects had a lower initial body mass index, had less weight and thigh fat to lose, and even showed an increase in tissue stiffness.

The conclusion of this study was that cellulite treatment by weight loss gives variable effects. Results depend on many factors that are only partially predictable regarding cellulite removal. Generally, though, you can expect more improvement the worse off you are as you begin to lose weight.

Overall Recommendations

What does this research tell us? First off, weight loss is not a dependable strategy for cellulite treatment for everyone. We know that cellulite is not necessarily associated with overweight or overfat. However, cellulite is more likely to improve beyond a certain starting point based on higher body mass index and thigh fat percentage.
