Synthetic Oil Has Numerous Benefits Except In Some Instances

By Cornelius Nunev

Many have, doubtless, seen synthetic oil at the local auto parts shop. Many have also realized that it is more expensive than usual oil and wondered if it is worthwhile. For the most part, synthetic oil actually has many advantages for most cars, though not all.

Longer life amongst synthetic oil advantages

Car Craft magazine explained that the synthetic oils are much better than the mineral oils on many amounts. For instance, the molecular level of the synthetic oil is more stable making it avoid vaporization or combustion at high amounts. It can withstand temperatures much better in your engine than normal mineral oils.

Synthetic oil does not have to be changed as frequently either because it does not thin as quickly. It does not lose viscosity like regular oil does. HowStuffWorks explained you can go 20,000 miles without an oil change with synthetic oil while AOL recommends closer to 5,000 miles.

Longer-lasting viscosity leads to smoother, better operation, according to Car Craft, which can result in less internal wear and longer engine life.

Not for every per-son

Synthetics are not also suited to higher mileage engines and older automobiles, as synthetic oils are "thinner" liquids than mineral oils. Early synthetics get a bit of a bad rap for precisely that reason, according to Popular Mechanics; when synthetics first appeared in the early 1970s, some car owners found them problematic. Engine seals would shrink as a result of thinner oil and leaks would occur. Modern synthetics do not have this problem.

Older vehicles will not be created the same way as modern automobiles and high mileage engines have lost tight tolerances, the room between parts. The modern engines are manufactured with the tight tolerances and that means they can use synthetic oil that has less space and gets more lubrication. According to AOL, some car makers require that the vehicles only use synthetics or blends, such as the Chevrolet Corvette that is currently only intended to use synthetic oil.

Do not get oil changed as much

There are some other good advantages of synthetic oils, according to Car Craft, including the better flow at low temperatures. That means start up is much easier for the vehicle no matter what the temperature is outside. There is also less sludge in the engine with fewer contaminants.

Some owners will swear by the smoother operation of the synthetic oil because it keeps parts from wearing more easily. Yahoo reports that Peter Gilbert, a male who used a 1989 Saab 900 SPG and put over a million miles on it, would only use synthetic oil.

In order to test synthetic oils, Mobile ran brand new BMW 325i it purchased in 1990 for four years every day at 85 miles per hour on a dynometer. The motor was disassembled and showed it was practically at factory specifications. It hit one million miles, and it still looked great.
