I Have Kids, Now What? Helpful Advice On Parenting

By Mike Dunlop

When you just don't know what to do and you are having doubts about your parenting skills, you may feel like you're all alone in the world. You're not! We've all been through it and we've all come through the other side better people and that includes our kids. Here are some tips on how we've dealt with a variety of parenting problems and survived.

Make sure you're teaching by example. Your child is much more apt to learn behaviors when you exhibit these behaviors. It's been proven that children learn by mimicking those around them. So if you're telling your kids not to yell in the house and you're doing it, they're more likely to follow what you do than what you say.

A useful tip for any parent is to resist the urge to do everything for your children. Instead, help your kids learn to do things on their own. In this way, they will develop an invaluable sense of confidence in their own skills and abilities and grow into capable, independent adults.

Encourage your child to be as independent as they can. By teaching a child to depend on you instead of themselves, they will grow up thinking it is okay to rely on others for things they can do themselves. This could prevent them from developing healthy relationships as an adult.

Reading is a very important part of your child's education. Reading is involved in every part of the learning process and it is also a huge part of society as a whole. Everyone must be able to read and communicate. Encourage your children to read at home and assist them in whatever ways possible to keep them at a high reading level.

While discipline is often necessary to keep your children in line, if it is inconsistently applied it can be worse than no discipline at all. If disciplinary actions seem random to your kids, they will tempt fate by continuing to act out. Develop a consistent plan for discipline and make sure that all the other adults who care for your children understand it.

While teens seem to want to keep their privacy, and aren't interested in sharing their lives with their parents, you still want to keep the door open to them should they decide to talk with you. Just let them know you are there with an open ear should they feel like talking about anything and everything.

Make sure to give your child a vitamin daily, starting around the age of 2. Even though your child may be getting vitamins from what they eat, it may not be enough for their growing body. Because children typically do not swallow pills, there are chewable and gummy vitamins made just for children.

Never feed your baby or toddler low-fat or skim milk as a primary source of nutrition. Infants and young children need a larger amount of fat in their diet in order for the brain to grow and develop properly. Early childhood is definitely not the time to diet!

Talk to your child in private if he has something to say. This way, he will not feel self-conscious about other people listening in, and he will be more open about how he expresses himself. You want to give him a chance to express his true feelings without judgement from other people.

The first step to being a super-parent is to constantly look for ways to improve. While it comes instinctively to most people, it's still important to learn more about the art of parenting. By using the information presented in this article, your kids can grow up to be happy and healthy, without too much strife on your end.
