Contact Genuine Breeders When Looking For Havanese Puppies For Sale

By Tameka Ware

If you are looking for Havanese puppies for sale, you should contact a registered breeder. The Havanese is still comparatively rare and may be expensive to buy. Although puppies may be found in pet shops, these may have come from dubious sources. Great care should be taken if purchasing from these places.

When a dog breed becomes fashionable and popular, dog-lovers are willing to pay high prices. In an effort to cash in on the demand, disreputable breeders sometimes establish 'puppy mills'. Dogs are bred continually and randomly in an effort to produce progeny for a profitable market. Conditions under which the dogs are kept are sometimes very inhumane. A genuine breeder will look after his breeding animals and will want to know that pups are going to good homes. He will ensure that the necessary inoculations have been attended to.

The more accurate name for this breed is Bichon Havanese. Bichon dogs are bearded. When the Havanese was first becoming established it was known as the Spanish silk poodle or the Havana silk dog. Spanish explorers and settlers are believed to be responsible for taking the dog to Cuba. European royalty and aristocracy were regular visitors to Cuba during the 18th century. The little white dogs with the silky coats quickly charmed the visitors and many were taken back to the continent. During the Cuban revolution, many fled the country taking their pets with them. Today, the Havanese is the national dog of Cuba although it is rare. It is the only native breed of that country.

The body is sturdy and solid. The breed has some unique traits apart from the silky coat. The shoulders are slightly lower than the rump so the top line rises a little. They also have a distinctive high-stepping action. This makes them agile but they are not fast.

The head is carried high. The eyes are large. They are playful, active dogs and will need regular exercise. The unique, silken coat provides good insulation and is ideal in tropical climates. The coat reaches a length of six or eight inches and is extremely profuse, light and soft. The plumed tail is set high. It should coil loosely over the rump.

This is a hypo-allergenic breed so is ideal for someone with allergies. They need a regular brush to help them get rid of dead hair and dander. Some owners trim the hair from around the eyes and genitals. Originally, the hair on the head was left hanging down to cover the eyes. This was believed to give protection from the strong glare of the sun.

In kennel clubs, the breed is classed as one of the 'toy' group. Despite being so small, they are rarely timid or fearful. They have been bred to be companions and enjoy the company of people and other pets. They are tolerant of children. The longevity is listed as around 14 years. The standard for show dogs limits the height to around 11 inches.

These are obedient little dogs, easy to train and keen to please. They are sometimes used as therapy or assistance dogs. If they develop health problems, it is usually of the eyes or skin. Some develop luxating patellas or slipped kneecaps. By choosing to contact a reputable breeder when looking for Havanese puppies for sale , there will be very few health problems to contend with.
