What To Know About Cockapoo Puppies

By Tara Webb

Cockapoo puppies are a mixed breed or even a cross breed animal. They are the result of Poodles and American or English Spaniels breeding. The majority of purebred associations do not consider this animal, or any other animal considered to be crossbred, to be a breed. There are many things to know about cockapoo puppies.

This animal has been around the United States since approximately the 1950s. The earliest dictionary reference came in the 1960s. In some cases, the animals are a mix of cockapoo and cocker spaniel or vise versa. Puppies of this sort are considered 75 percent poodle and cocker spaniel.

Typically these dogs are considered healthy. As a breed, they do not have many health problems. As is true of many small dogs, they usually live long lives, often 15 years or more. Still, both breeds from which this animal is developed suffer from luxating patellas, also known as loose knees. This condition can be passed on through genetics. For this reasons, it is recommended that cockapoo owners have their pups check for the problem.

Similarly, purebred spaniels and poodles are known to have eye disorders, such as PRA or progressive retinal atrophy. Before breeding these animals, have a exam and DNA test done to check for PRA. Cockapoos, like most dogs with floppy ears, are more susceptible to developing ear infections and should have their ears kept clean and dry.

Generally, these dogs are tan, cream and white in color and often weight between six and 20 pounds. As little ones, it will be hard to know what the dog will look like when it becomes full grown. Some look more like spaniels and others more like poodles. As both puppies and adults, the dogs are popular and are known for having outgoing, active, loving and intelligent personalities. Because these animals are not considered purebred, they do not have defined characteristics.

The dogs are easy to take care of and require very low maintenance. They do not have much dander and hardly shed. The puppies can take qualities from either of the parent breeds. Usually cockapoos are small framed, even when they become adults.

It is best if people who own these animals have a place large enough for the animal to play around in. This is because these pups are known for their activeness and energy. Regular exercise is crucial. Because these animals are known to overeat, they must be monitored and given the opportunity to burn it off so that weight does not become a problem. This dog is best for families.

The fun personalities, low maintenance, good health and general friendliness of cockapoo puppies make them an ideal animal for most household. This type of animal is a mixture of a poodle and an American or English cocker spaniel. What breed it will take after is hard to say, but generally they are small in size and tan, white or cream in color. They may have a solid coat or freckles and spots. Although the dogs are popular, they are not recognized as a breed by many associations.
