Great Advice On African Grey Toys

By Thelma Kent

A parrot has a great character and can be good fun to have in your home as they are so intelligent. The problem is that they need to be stimulated which may pose a problem when you are out. If left alone for any length of time, they will become unhappy, so it is vital that you provide them with a variety of African grey toys.

In nature these birds live in a group all the time, interacting with each other constantly. Being alone in a room, in a cage is unnatural. If you were to keep your bird in this way it will become bored, probably start plucking its feathers and may even become depressed and ill.

Placing the cage where the bird can see out of doors is of great help. You can make that even more interesting for him by placing a bird feeder there so he can watch wild birds and other animals coming and going. However, the most important way to keep the bird happy is a supply of suitable entertaining gadgets.

Your parrot will probably be delighted with a new toy, but it may take time as though curious, they can be scared of new things. The brightly-colored, jangly, dangling thing might look great to you, but terrify your pet. Good pet stores sell bird products specially endorsed as 'suitable for Parrots', but whatever you select, introduce it gently.

There is no need to spend a lot of money on fun items for your bird. They delight in much of what we think of as rubbish. Plastic cups, straws and caps from bottles, big buttons, and wooden spills, bits of card or tubes offer hours of fun.

Most african grey toys bought from the shops are brightly colored, which attracts the bird and may have bells or other musical sounds. Most are made of plastic or wood. Kraft sticks, rings, balls and tubes, joined together with wire are very popular. Many have rope attachments for further shredding or separate woven patches that can be attached to the side of the cage.
