Urban book publishers bring to the forefront the needs of inner city cultures in America beautifully in fiction form. The main focus is African American, but it can also be other inner city cultures too. Everyone grows up with a sense of pride and belonging to the place where they are from, these books touch that sense in a way that we all can relate to.

Many different cultures can exist in Inner city America, but there are things that these cultures and the characters all have in common by living out their lives in similar neighborhoods. This has formed a strong niche where authors and stories are wanted and needed. Urban publishers are aware of the need to expand and grow the genre in the industry, and want to attract new urban fiction writers with good quality stories for publication.

Street Fiction Writers often write stories with a darker tone that often focuses on the not so pretty side of living in the inner cities. It is not unusual to find books containing profanity, violence and sex. It is definitely not for young children and caters to a more adult crowd.

Good alternate reading for young adults is Urban Teen Fiction. This sub category focuses more on things that are happening with teens and the struggles they face living in the inner city today. Street Christian Fiction is another sub category that keeps the same setting and tone but concentrates on the spiritual side of living inside the city and there is no offensive content.

This writing niche has a colorful history deep in African American culture. It goes by many names including Street Lit, Street Fiction and Hip Hop Lit. Hip Hop Lit came about around the same time as Hip Hop did. In fact, many a famous Hip Hop singer also has a book out in this genre.

Many critics don't like the drugs and violence that these books portray. Yet others say that these books address the many problems with the way of life in these areas. It is good to have an outlet, and many fans of the books find it very close to real life and appreciate the stories. They are getting more people into reading that otherwise would not have been interested.

Readers and fans continue to grow in this quickly evolving niche. As this genre gains momentum there will be opportunities for talented authors to submit their manuscripts for publication in the industry.
