Mold Testing Tips For a Healthier Home

By Roy Forchet

Molds can be just about anywhere and they can cause a lot of damage wherever they are found. They can cause serious damage to a home and affect the health of the individuals living there. Luckily, there are ways to determine if you have a mold problem in your home. Try the mold testing tips and catch the growths before they can cause any damage.

Number one of the mold testing tips is to follow the smell. A lot of times, you will be able to smell the problem long before you can see it. This means that if you notice a moldy, earthy smell, don't discount. Follow your nose and try to find the location of the growth.

Look out for signs of excessive moisture is the next mold testing tip. If you notice stains on the walls and ceiling, warped wood, and peeling or cracked paint, these areas probably have a lot of moisture built up. Normally, if you see any of these signs, there is already growth going on but it can help you to find the problem areas. You may also want to check areas that are moist and dark on a routine basis to catch and prevent the growth of molds.

One of the neatest of the mold testing tips that you can try is to use a black light on different surfaces. This light will glow yellow if there is fungus present. This is a great way to find the exact location of the growths.

Pay attention to the health of the individuals living in the home. Watch for more exacerbated allergies or respiratory symptoms that what is usual. This may be a sign that there are spores in the air.

The last real mold testing tip is to buy a test kit that will tell you if you have spores or fungus in your home. There are two basic types, air and surface, and it is recommended that you do at least one of each. It may also be a good idea to do one of the air tests outside your home and one inside. This will tell you if there are higher levels of spores inside your home than outside.

If none of these mold testing tips works for you but you still suspect that you have some. Call an inspector. This is a more expensive option but it will tell you definitively if you have a problem. They will also be able to locate the source of the growth and give advice on removing it.
