Preventing Crime If You're an Elderly

By Ram Collins

Even though elderly individuals have lesser chances to face crime compared to adults and teenagers, the fact is that it is still a possibility. In fact, felons will even prefer to target these elderly people. That is why many people of this age are victims of crime scenes such as home repair scams, car-napping and robbery. The worst part is they could be seriously injured knowing that they have weaker bodies.

Although you are exposed to these risks, you still should grasp every moment to enjoy your life. As you grab every opportunity, you just have to be more careful.

Promote safety and security at home - Ascertain that your doors, locks and even your windows are impervious to anyone who tries to get in. You can also get an alarm system. Even when you're outside of your house, you have to verify your doors and windows are fully locked.

Marking your valuables with an I.D number is a good idea so make a request for that on your local police station. If a stranger knocks at your door, you should always ask for a proof of identity. If you are not comfortable in letting this person in, then it's best not to open the door. Storing too much money in the house is a no-no. Be aware of who your neighbors are. You might want to join a Neighborhood Watch Program if it's available.

Be Street Smart - Do try to stay alert. Walk with a friend. Stay away from unsafe places like dark parking lots or alleys. Do keep your car doors locked at all times. Don't open your car door or roll-down your window for strangers. Do park in well-lit areas. Do carry your purse close to your body with the strap over your shoulder and across your chest. Don't resist a robber. Hand over your cash right away if confronted.

Apply Maximum Security to your Money - If you have any banking transactions, don't do it regularly. If you are carrying a large amount of money, place them in your inside pocket. Credit cards and checkbook should not go together. If a thief robs them, he or she could forge your signature.
